The 13U Collins Hill Eagles Green team brought home the Championship Sunday, August 23, 2009 in the USSSA Iron Horse Classic in Monroe/Social Circle – their first tournament of the fall season. Twelve teams participated in the 2 day tournament sponsored by JB Athletics. The Green Eagles went 2-0 in pool play outscoring their opponents 18-4 in two games while finishing their last pool play game near midnight on Saturday. Sunday brought tough competition in bracket play as the Green Eagles overcame a 6-0 deficit for a come-from-behind victory over Team Loganville 8-7. The bats came alive in the 2nd bracket game and the Green Eagles secured a victory over the Georgia Sluggers 7-4. Justin Dutka contributed with a 3 run homerun over the 300ft fence, what a shot! The championship game brought the toughest competition the Green Eagles have seen in a while. The Georgia Roadrunners, a select major team from Alpharetta and East Cobb, were stacked and had outscored their opponents in pool and bracket play by a combined score of 54-6 in 4 games. Outstanding pitching and strong defense was the story of the late evening for the Green Eagles as Jonathan Hughes and Justin Dutka combined for 7 innings to shut down a very powerful hitting Roadrunner team, holding them to 3 runs in the championship game. Key hits and excellent base running led to the Green Eagles scoring 4 runs after 5 innings. Gutsy defense and shutout pitching for the remaining 2 innings secured the victory over the powerful Roadrunners. Congratulations to the 13U CH Green Eagles for a great tournament and bringing our park another hard fought Championship!
