Softball FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

When does the season start?
Collins Hill has two seasons – spring and fall –Evaluations are usually in February for Spring and in August for Fall.  Practices typically start in early February for spring and early August for fall. Games are played from March to May in spring and September through mid-November for fall.

What are evaluations?
Held before the Spring and Fall season; this is where the players will run through a set of hitting, base-running, fielding, throwing, and (for older groups) pitching drills to allow the coaches to make draft evaluations. Evaluations allow the softball association to make sure teams are even in terms of talent.

How many games and practices are there?
Teams typically practice 3-4 times a week preceding the season and 1-2 per week during the season. Teams play approximately 12 games. Games are played on about 2 per week with one of those game most likely on Saturdays. Practice days/times are set by each individual head coach. Each team will have its own regular practice time, and it could be any day from Sunday through Friday, depending on what works best for each individual team. Practices and/or games during the week are typically either at 6P or 730P). Each family is responsible to get their player to and from games and practices.

How do I check on the current condition of the fields for inclement weather on practices and game day?
Communication about practices and/or games will come from the head coach or Team Mom.

Where are games played?
We play against other Gwinnett County softball associations.  Our home field is Collins Hill Park and will play away games across the county.

What is the cost?
Registration fees are subject to change. For the spring 2024 season, the fees are  $250 for all age groups. Other fees during the year:  spirit wear, if you choose to order, and end of year celebrations (i.e., end of season party for the entire CHAA Softball Association and Team Party/Coach’s gift).  There is also a $50 spirit fee that is included in the registration fee that covers trophies, pennants, and a spirit shirt/spirit sweatshirt, gift for older age groups, and the end of the season celebration.

There are scholarship opportunities through the Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Foundation.  Here is the link for more information on applying and deadlines, etc: https://www.gwinnettcounty.com/web/gwinnett/departments/communityservices/parksandrecreation/gwinnettparksfoundation.

What do the registration fees pay for?
Uniforms, balls, insurance, umpire fees, field lining, field maintenance, trophies and other items.

What equipment does my child need?
All they need is a softball glove, fielders face mask (required for all positions in tball and peewee), bat (must be ASA), and batting helmet with face mask. Uniforms are provided with your cost. Cleats and chest protectors are not provided but they are recommended.

What is the registration deadline?
The registration deadline for each season will be posted on the home page of our website. If the deadline has passed, we occasionally will take extra players if rosters still have open spots, even after a season has begun.

How are teams picked?
Either by a draft or by the coordinator of the age division in question. The method must be agreed upon by the head coaches of each age division. The goal is to make the teams equal in strength. Consideration is given to placing friends and siblings together if requested and to keep players with former coaches if requested, although we may not be able to honor all requests.

Are scores kept?
Scores are kept at all age levels.

Is there an End of Season Tournament?
Yes.  Each season has an end of season tournament that typically starts on a Monday and goes through Sunday.

What awards are given at the end of the season?
All players receive a participation trophy at the end of the season.  First and second place tournament teams receive trophies in the End of the Season Tournament as well.

What age division would my child play?
Ages are for 4-18 years old. For spring seasons, the age division is based on the player’s age on the previous Dec. 31. For fall seasons, the age division is based on the player’s age on the upcoming Dec. 31.  Please see the age chart on the softball page of www.chaasports.com.

Note: At the discretion of the league coordinator, some girls may ‘’play up’’ or ‘’play down’’ in age division due to experience or skill level, family reasons (keeping siblings together) and travel reasons (players who carpool.)

How do I become a coach?
If you are interested in coaching softball at any level at CH Softball, please email the Softball Assistant Director @ Jasonketring@gmail.com

Are there other areas I can volunteer besides coaching?
You can volunteer to be a team mom/parent.  This parent helps getting other parents on the team to volunteer for the dugout during games, or coordinates activities such as snack schedule or uniform ordering.  Each team will need scorebook volunteers as well.

What is the competition like?
There are beginner players in each age division, although their numbers decrease in each older age division. Most tball players are beginners.

I have three other children, and I need to know what the schedule is going to be like for my 5 year old tball player?

Until registration is finalized, we will not have a schedule.  However, according to county guidelines, we can only have up to four (4) meetings per week, which includes practices, games, and cages.  The practice schedule will be given to you when your child is drafted, and the game schedule will be given out about a week prior to Opening Day.
